BMW-specific module scan
Every control module is scanned, not just the engine computer. BMWs store faults across dozens of modules — the engine, transmission, DSC, airbags, iDrive, lighting and comfort systems — and a generic code reader sees only a fraction of them.
Recently cleared fault codes
The technician looks for signs that fault memory was wiped shortly before the sale and recovers what can be recovered, so a warning light that was 'fixed' with a scan tool doesn't slip past you.
Cold start and engine noise
Where the seller allows, the car is heard from a cold start, when timing-chain rattle and VANOS noise are easiest to catch.
Leaks, top and bottom
Oil filter housing, valve cover and oil pan gaskets are checked for fresh seepage and for signs of a recent degrease.
Cooling system
Expansion tank, hoses, plastic fittings, the electric water pump and thermostat are inspected, along with any cooling faults in the module scan.
Body, paint and frame
Paint depth is measured on every panel to find respray and filler, panel gaps are checked, and the frame is measured for signs of a previous accident or flood.

Timing chain on the N20 four-cylinder
Timing chain guide wear is commonly reported on certain model years of the N20 2.0-liter turbo. The specialist listens for chain noise and checks service history for related repairs.

VANOS and oil leaks
VANOS solenoid faults, and oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks, are among the most commonly reported BMW issues. An oil filter housing leak left alone can reach the serpentine belt.

Electric water pump and thermostat
Many six-cylinder BMWs use an electric water pump and thermostat that are commonly reported to fail with age, often with little warning.

Cooling-system plastics
Expansion tanks, radiator necks and hose fittings made of plastic become brittle in South Florida heat. Cracks and residue are noted.

iDrive and electrical
iDrive, window regulators, lighting and comfort electronics are function-tested, and stored electrical faults are read from the modules that control them.

What does a BMW pre-purchase inspection check?
A BMW specialist scans every module, looks for recently cleared codes, checks for oil and coolant leaks, inspects the cooling system, listens to the engine (from a cold start where possible), measures paint depth on every panel, checks the frame, and test-drives it where the seller allows. You get a written report with photos the same day.
Can you read BMW fault memory that a basic scanner misses?
Yes. The full module scan reads stored faults across the car's modules — where BMW keeps many codes a basic OBD-II reader never shows — and looks for signs that codes were recently cleared.
Is the person inspecting my BMW a BMW specialist?
Yes. Anthony Lapadula, the owner, dispatches a Master Certified Technician who works on BMWs. We don't send a generalist to a BMW.
