When is a shop inspection the better choice?
A good shop has one real advantage: a lift. With the car in the air, a technician gets an unobstructed look at the underbody, suspension, exhaust and leaks. If the seller is local, willing to let the car go, and you have a trusted shop — especially a shop that specializes in the brand — a shop inspection is a solid option.
In practice, that's often not how used-car deals work. Many dealers won't let a car leave the lot, private sellers are reluctant to hand their keys to a stranger, and driving a car across Miami-Dade traffic to a shop can take half a day. A car that has to be driven to a shop may also be warmed up before the technician sees it, which hides cold-start noises.

Is a mobile inspection as thorough as a shop inspection?
For most checks, yes — module scans, code recovery, paint depth, frame measurement, leaks and a test drive where the seller allows don't need a shop. A lift gives better underbody access; Inspect First's Premium inspection includes an on-lift check when a lift is available.
Will a dealer let me take the car to my own mechanic?
Some will, many won't. A mobile inspection happens on the lot, so the dealer doesn't have to release the car.
Can you inspect a car at a private seller's house?

Why does a cold start matter?
