Independent pre-purchase inspection vs the dealer's own inspection

A dealer inspection isn't worthless. A manufacturer certified pre-owned program at a franchise dealer usually means a technician trained on that brand went through a defined checklist, and CPO cars often carry an extended warranty. If you're buying a late-model CPO car with a manufacturer-backed warranty, and you've read what that warranty actually covers, the dealer's inspection plus the warranty may be a reasonable level of protection.

The problem is the conflict of interest. The dealer's inspection is done by the party that profits from the sale, and you usually see the checklist, not the findings. You won't be told that fault codes were cleared the morning you arrived, and a multi-point checklist rarely includes paint-depth readings that reveal a repainted quarter panel.
